No matter what month it is, you will always find that London offers up a plethora of events to entertain, delight and inform you. This month, we highlight our top 5 picks of cool happenings around town.
Earlier this summer, I was delighted to come across a cool website called Living London Ontario. It first showed up in my Twitter feed and then Facebook and I immediately checked it out. Right away it was clear we have a shared love for London and for sharing that experience with newcomers who are relocating to the city.
An important part of knowing how to sell London is looking at how other cities sell themselves. The flashy websites, the glossy brochures, the eye-catching tradeshow booths. If you haven’t seen them you can probably guess what they look like. They tout an attractive cost of living, a thriving economy, a vibrant cultural and entertainment scene, great healthcare and educational institutions and, of course, an amazing downtown. All things that are absolutely critical to the ongoing effort to attract newcomers and keep the talent we have.
As summer winds down, September swings us back into the fall leg of our long festival season with plenty of incredible events to distract us from back-to-school and work blues. It’s also a busy time of year for our local farms, offering up seasonal ingredients and family fun.
We know making personal and professional connections in a new city can often spell the difference between a new employee treating London as a short career pit stop or seeing London as a long term home to build a rewarding career AND life (emphasis on the life part). Many people choose to relocate for a great job, promotion, income etc. but will often choose to stay because they have made an emotional connection to their new city.
Make no mistake, beer brewing heritage runs deep in London. Carling Brewing Company was founded here in 1818. And the now global giant, Labatt Brewing Company, was founded in 1847. In more recent years, London has been enjoying a renaissance when it comes to the craft beer industry.
Imagine that you have to flee your home and country because of conflict and war. Perhaps you are leaving members of your family behind, schoolmates, or the job and profession that provided for your family. This is currently the reality of thousands of Syrian refugees who are being displaced because of a war.
They say that time flies when you’re having fun. I can attest to the truth in this saying. I can't believe that it has been one year since I launched CityMatch in the city that I love so much. It seems like it was only yesterday that I shared my dream to launch a business that would support local employers and the talented men and women who relocate to our city to live, work, and play.
As a society, we tend to rely on terms like GDP (Gross Domestic Product) as a measure of our economic “health” but this fails to capture the areas of our lives that we care about most and have the most impact upon our ability to be happy and live well.
I always knew that London was going to be the city for me. I didn’t grow up here and I had never lived here before, but my frequent visits since a young age made me appreciate everything this city had to offer, and what Alberta lacked for me.
While most people and organizations understand the value of providing settlement support to new employees who have chosen to relocate to London, I’ve had a lot of questions about what exactly I do, as well as how CityMatch differs from other relocation services. The best way for me to explain is to give you an inside glimpse into my day-to-day, and how CityMatch functions on the ground.
Since launching CityMatch in London, Ontario just over a month ago, I have been overwhelmed in the best way possible by your response. Thank you to everyone who has played a role in supporting me. Your contributions and words of encouragement have meant a great deal to me.
I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who provided me with a soft-landing as an entrepreneur here in London.
I’ve been an entrepreneur-in-waiting for a long time. I always knew I wanted to build a business of my own but waited until now. Why wait? I wanted a business that would be able to fully leverage all of my experience and knowledge along with my passions and interests. I also wanted a business that would bring purpose, meaning and joy to my everyday and would have a positive impact among those I served. I wanted a business that would embody my values and that would honour my 4 simple truths...
